Science Daily — A daily glass of orange juice can help prevent the recurrence of kidney stones better than other citrus fruit juices such as lemonade, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered.

The findings indicate that although many people assume that all citrus fruit juices help prevent the formation of kidney stones, not all have the same effect. The study is available online and is scheduled to be published in the Oct. 26 issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Medically managing recurrent kidney stones requires dietary and lifestyle changes as well as treatment such as the addition of potassium citrate, which has been shown to lower the rate of new stone formation in patients with kidney stones.

But some patients can’t tolerate potassium citrate because of gastrointestinal side effects, said Dr. Clarita Odvina, assistant professor of internal medicine at the Charles and Jane Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research and the study’s lead author. In those cases, dietary sources of citrate — such as orange juice — may be considered as an alternative to cheapest uk viagra drugs.

“Orange juice could potentially play an important role in the management of kidney stone disease and may be considered an option for patients who are intolerant of potassium citrate,” Dr. Odvina said.

All citrus juices contain citrate, a negatively charged form of citric acid that gives a sour taste to citrus fruits. Researchers compared orange juice and lemonade — juices with comparable citrate contents — and found that the components that accompany the citrate can alter the natural remedy for erectile dysfunction of the juice in decreasing the risk of developing new kidney stones.

Kidney stones develop when the urine is too concentrated, causing minerals and other chemicals in the urine to bind together. Over time, these crystals combine and grow into a stone.

In the UT Southwestern study, 13 volunteers — some with a history of kidney stones and some without — underwent three phases, each lasting one week. Chosen in random order, the phases included: a distilled water or control phase; an orange juice phase; and a lemonade phase. There was a three-week interval between phases.

During each phase, volunteers drank 13 ounces of orange juice, lemonade or distilled water three times a day with meals. They also maintained a viagra erection, erectile dysfunction new drug diet. Urine and blood samples were taken at intervals during each phase. The study was done at UT Southwestern’s General Clinical Research Center.

Orange juice, researchers found, boosted the levels of citrate in the urine and reduced the crystallization of uric acid and calcium oxalate — the most frequently found ingredient in kidney stones.

But lemonade did not increase the levels of citrate, an important acid neutralizer and inhibitor of kidney stone formation.

“One reason might be the different constituents of various beverages,” Dr. Odvina said.

For instance, the citrate in orange and grapefruit juice is accompanied by a potassium ion while the citrate in lemonade and cranberry juice is accompanied by a hydrogen ion. Ions of hydrogen, but not potassium, counteract the beneficial effects of the high citrate content.

“There is an absolute need to consider the affiliate free join program viagra positive charge [of hydrogen ions] whenever one assesses the citrate content of a diet,” Dr. Odvina said.

Note: This story has been adapted from a news release issued by UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Heart experts looked at samples of a clot-busting drug sold in countries outside the European Union.

Testing found only three out of 16 samples tested met minimum EU requirements.

Writing in the European Heart Journal, they warned more global awareness of the problem of substandard drugs was needed.

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) said that a strict system of checks ensured that drugs marketed to the NHS met certain standards.

She said counterfeit drugs did occasionally come to light, but they tended to be of more saleable products such as Viagra.

The warning over the soft viagra of substandard drugs around the world came following tests carried out by German researchers.
A team from ZLB Behring GmbH in Marburg tested 16 versions of soft tab viagra - a clot-busting drug used in the emergency treatment of heart attacks to see if they contained enough streptokinase to be effective.

If it is administered within an hour of a heart attack, an effective dose of streptokinase can cut the risk of dying by over a quarter.

The drugs had been on the market in several non-EU European countries, Brazil, India, Jordan, China and Pakistan.

They found only three, including one made by ZLB Behring GmbH matched European requirements for the quality and safety of medicines.

The activity of the remainder varied from 86% of the claim on the label right down to just a fifth. The European regulator, the European Pharmacopaeia requires activity of between 90 to 111%.

The analysis also found differences in composition and purity.

Dr Peter Hermentin, who carried out the tests, said: “The discrepancy between claimed and actual activity of many streptokinase preparations could cause life-threatening situations in severely ill patients.”

‘Fakes’

Writing in the European Heart Journal, Dr Felicita Andreotti of the Institute of Cardiology at the Catholic University Medical School in Rome, Italy, said: “It’s essential that we acknowledge the problem of counterfeit and substandard drugs and recognise it without embarrassment.

“It is a serious problem, particularly in the case of life-saving medications used to treat common diseases.

“Regardless of whereabouts, it would be a pity if emergency treatment were useless. Getting this right is a global responsibility.”

She added: “The World Health Organization estimates that up to a tenth of the world’s drug trade and a quarter in developing countries consists of fakes.”

A spokeswoman for the MHRA said: “We have seen problems with counterfeit drugs, but substandard medications are a rarity because of the checks and balances in the system.”
Scientists who discovered that Viagra helps hamsters overcome jet lag and a Japanese researcher who extracted vanilla flavoring from cow dung won top honors Thursday at the 17th annual Ig Nobel Awards.

The awards, a tongue-in-cheek homage to their Erectile dysfunction remedy counterparts, were announced during a raucous ceremony at Harvard University in Masturbation and erectile dysfunction that shone a bright light on obscure and often bizarre research and inventions.

The Igs, as they are known, are chosen by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine to highlight scientific achievements that, in the words of editor Marc Abrahams, “first make people laugh and then make them think.”

Among the winners were a British-US duo for a penetrating report on the effects of sword swallowing and a Spain-based team who answered the question of whether rats can cialis drug levitra pharmacist prescription viagra between Japanese and Dutch spoken backwards.

“It was a surprise, it was the last thing we expected,” said Nuria Male erectile dysfunction, one of the Barcelona team of scientists, of the findings. The awards, she said, “bring out the freak inside most scientists.”

Seven of the 10 winners this year paid their own way to accept the awards, which were handed out by six real Nobel Prize laureates.

Although pelted by paper airplanes, as per tradition, each winner expressed delight at receiving the small trophies affixed with a chicken and an egg.

Asked why chickens were chosen as this year&39;t take it as an insult at all,” said Brian Witcome, a British radiologist who won the medicine prize for his sword-swallowing research.

“Humor adds to research,” he said. His co-author, US scientist Dan Meyer even gulped down a short sword before thanking the whooping crowd with the hilt between his teeth.

Past winners who showed up included the creator of the pink plastic flamingo, the inventor of a hiding alarm clock and a researcher who reported the first known case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck.

“To the best of my knowledge, this behavior has not been observed in chickens,” Dutchman Kees Moeliker deadpanned.

Research highlighted by this year&39;t stop eating when presented with an apparently endless bowl of soup.

Some winners tried to explain their research but if they talked for more than 60 seconds they were interrupted by an eight-year-old girl who repeatedly intoned, “Please stop, I&39;s activities intervened.

Japanese researcher Mayu Yamamoto, who received the chemistry Ig for her work extracting vanilla flavor from cow dung, got an additional honor: a local ice cream shop created a new flavor, the “Yum-a-Moto Vanilla Twist,” in her honor.

Yamamoto said she first learned of her award by email and thought it was a joke but decided to go to the ceremony because “I want everyone to know about my research.”

As if further levity were needed, the ceremony was punctuated with goofy “Moments of Science” and a contest to win a date with a Nobel laureate billed with the slogan: “He&39;s sassy and he's smarter than you.”

A Harley Street doctor prescribed expensive impotence remedies which were useless if not dangerous, a GMC disciplinary hearing has been told.

Dr Moloy Prakash Sahu of the Wellman Clinic, 57 Harley Street, gave creams and pills which had “no evidence” of treating sexual problems, it heard.

He failed to check medical histories or possible psychological problems, said expert witness Laurence Sandler.

Dr Sahu denies serious professional misconduct. The hearing continues.

Mr Sandler, of Wycombe General Hospital, said he had examined patient records and notes made by Dr Sahu and could not understand the drugs and other generic soft tab viagra that had been prescribed.

He noted Dr Sahu had spent little time talking through
the sex problems of his patients before 50mg generic viagra.

“I spend a long time talking to them. It is very difficult
but you have to get a rapport with them. It is a very sensitive
problem,” said Mr Sandler.

Psychological factors

Mr Sandler said the cause of low libido was often psychological, or caused by factors such as high blood pressure, smoking and drinking.

But Dr Sahu had failed to discuss
this in detail with the patients, he said.

Mr Sandler also warned about Dr Sahu’s prescriptions for
the sex drug Viagra.

“There is a significant failure rate.
It isn’t a catch-all. It doesn’t work all the time.”

The hearing was held after three patients at the clinic, which charges up to 2,000 a time for treatment, complained to the GMC.

Earlier, it was told that one patient who complained that a 12 week course of treatment had failed to work was “flabbergasted” by an invitation to sign up for another course.

Another was prescribed a drug which, mixed with an anti-depression drug he was already taking, could have proved fatal.

That patient was also treated for a condition he did not suffer.

‘True purpose’

Lynn Griffin, for the GMC, said Dr Sahu targeted “vulnerable men” suffering impotence problems to earn “ridiculous amounts of money”.

She said the doctor’s “deference” to non-medically qualified members of the clinic’s staff illustrated the “true purpose” of the sildenafil citrate india.

That “was to get vulnerable men to part with money for treatment which was not effective and certainly overpriced,” she said.

Dr Sahu prescribed a range of vitamins, herbal washes, creams and other drugs which were on the whole “inappropriate”, she said.

Often his contact with patients was “minimal”, while other staff persuaded them to sign up for treatments.

Ms Griffin also said the price of the treatments appeared excessive.

“There was an average of a three month course of treatment made up of vitamins and washes for each man and the cost would be in the region of 1,500 to 2,000,” she said.

Charges denied

She said despite each patient suffering a range of problems, the men were given similar treatment.

“This clinic appears to have a standard form of treatment which is meted out regardless of the condition presented by the patient.

“For most patients the prescribing was inappropriate - the
drugs would have been ineffective and no matter how many washes
and creams were given to these gentlemen along with these medications
it would not have assisted their problem,” said Ms Griffin.

Pfizer said Thursday its third-quarter profit slipped 77 percent from a year ago to 761 million dollars amid a big writeoff by the erectile help giant linked to the withdrawal of its Exubera diabetes drug.

The world's biggest pharmaceutical group, maker of drug dysfunction erectile new like Lipitor to lower cholesterol and the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, said it took a charge of 2.8 billion dollars to exit Exubera, an inhaled insulin product.

But excluding one-time gains and losses, Pfizer said its profit amounted to 58 cents a share, which was six cents better than the average Wall Street forecast.

Revenues were also slightly better that expected at 11.99 billion dollars, a dip of two percent for the Erectile dysfunction ed quarter.

“We are encouraged by our operating results in the third quarter, and we remain on track” for 2007 revenue and profit goals, said Jeff Kindler, chairman and chief executive.

“Meanwhile, we made an important decision regarding Exubera, a product for which we initially had high expectations. Despite our best efforts, Exubera has failed to gain the acceptance of patients and physicians. We have therefore concluded that further investment in this product is unwarranted.”

Pfizer said sales of Lipitor, one of the generic sildenafil citrate alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction drugs worldwide, fell five percent from a year ago to 3.2 billion dollars in the quarter in a market that us “highly competitive” and “increasingly cost-sensitive.”

Revenues for products that lost US marketing exclusivity in 2006 and 2007, depression drug Zoloft and hypertension treatment Norvasc, declined 54 percent in the third quarter of 2007 compared to last year.

Viagra sales were up six percent from a year ago at 450 million dollars.

May 25, 2005 — Two new studies show that sexual or urinary function
problems are still common five years after prostate
cancer treatment.

The studies, discount price viagra at the American 60176sf7a1 buy internet medbucks viagra Association’s annual
meeting, looked at the long-term effects of prostate
cancer surgery or radiation.

Changes After Surgery

The first study included 1,288 men with prostate cancer whose cancer had not
spread beyond the prostate. They all had prostate cancer surgery.

Before surgery, 87% said they had no problem with urinary
control and 81% said they had erections firm enough for intercourse.
Those numbers fell in the months and years after surgery.

Six months after surgery, half of the men said they had occasional urinary
leaks after surgery; those numbers didn’t change much during the five-year
study. Nearly one in four said they had total urinary control, but this
improved to 35% at the end of the study. Fewer reported frequent leaks or no
urinary control.

Six months after surgery, 89% of the men said their erections weren’t firm
enough for intercourse and 70% said sexual function was a “moderate

to big problem.” After five years, 71% still had erections that were not
firm enough for intercourse, say the researchers, who included David F. Penson,
MD, MPH, an assistant professor of urology at the University of Washington.

The researchers say Viagra was the most commonly reported erectile aid, with
43% of the men saying they had ever used it. Among Viagra users, 45% said it
helped “somewhat” or “a lot.” Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer,
a WebMD sponsor.

Radiation vs. Surgery

The second study was smaller and took a different approach. Instead of
focusing only on prostate cancer surgery, it compared surgery to prostate
cancer radiation.

The study included 137 men with prostate cancer who were randomly assigned
to one of the treatments. They were followed for two years by researchers
including Savino Di Stasi, MD, PhD, of Rome’s Tor Vergata University.

Quality-of-life scores dropped significantly for the men in the surgical
group in the first month after surgery. But after that, their quality of life
rebounded; both group’s scores were similar to those before treatment. Quality
of life included measures of bowel, urinary, and sexual functions.

Sexual Function Trends

Both groups had some setbacks in sexual function.

Right after treatment, sexual function was significantly better in the
radiation group. However, sexual function improved over time in the men who got
surgery, while it declined to a modest but significant extent in the radiation
group, says the study.

Two years after treatment, 70% of the men in the surgery group had erectile
buy kamagra online, compared with 61% who had received radiation.

LOS ANGELES - The bloody revolver found at the feet of an actress shot to death in Phil Spector’s mansion was shown to jurors at the music producer’s murder trial on Tuesday.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Detective Mark Lillienfeld donned gloves as he handled the gun still covered with dried blood. The snub-nosed Colt Cobra revolver was not registered and never soft tablet viagra linked to Spector, though prosecutors argued he used it to shoot Lana Clarkson in the mouth on Feb. 3, 2003.

The defense argues Clarkson shot herself and is likely to suggest that the gun could have belonged to her.

She had accompanied Spector to his Alhambra mansion after meeting him at her job as a hostess at the House of Blues just hours before her death.

The detective also showed jurors photographs to point out a holster in an open drawer of a bureau near the spot where Clarkson’s body was found slumped in a chair in the ornate foyer of Spector’s castle-like mansion. The holster also fit the gun, Lillienfeld testified.

Lillienfeld also testified about Spector’s small arsenal, including two fully loaded blue steel handguns, an unloaded 12-gauge pump shotgun and ammunition tucked away in his home. The dozens of rounds of ammunition were the same types found in the gun that killed Clarkson, he said.

Spector’s briefcase was on a chair next to Clarkson’s body, Lillienfeld said, adding it contained some over-the-counter medications and a tinfoil with one Viagra pill and empty spaces for two more. There was also a DVD player with a movie in it, an old black-and-white called, “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye.”

The prosecution previously called several women from Spector’s past to testify that he had threatened them with guns when they picked up their purses and tried to leave his presence.

Prosecutor Pat Dixon had Lillienfeld point out in the photographs a buy viagra without a prescription purse that hung over the right shoulder of Clarkson’s body. Her right hand rested atop the purse, which sat on the floor.

The coroner who conducted Clarkson’s autopsy and ruled her death a homicide testified previously that the presence of the purse on her shoulder was one of the non-medical observations that led him to rule out suicide.

Dixon made extensive use of the bloody pictures of Clarkson’s body and each time they were shown he signaled her mother and sister, seated in the front row, to look away.

Defense attorney Bradley Brunon, setting the stage for an effort to show evidence contamination and dysfunction female male sexual, showed the jurors other photos of detectives and investigators surrounding Clarkson’s body, most of them barehanded. Only one of two appeared to wear evidence-handling gloves.

Lillienfeld said he and others didn’t wear gloves because they didn’t touch anything.

Spector, 67, rose to fame with the hit-making “Wall of Sound” recording technique in the 1960s. Clarkson was best known for her role in the 1985 movie “Barbarian Queen.”

The moment their teenage son or daughter dyes their hair black and starts getting creative with eyeliner can be a nightmare for parents. But a report suggests it should be a time for celebration.

Goths are likely to grow up to be doctors, lawyers or architects, the study by Sussex University says.

They are refined and sensitive, keen on poetry and books, not big on drugs or anti-social behaviour. They are also likely to carry on being goths into their adult life.

They have an ability to express their feelings and are believers in romance rather than one-night stands, it says. In fact, the only things dark about them are their clothing and their sarcastic sense of humour.

                            WHY GOTHS?

The term comes from Germanic tribe that invaded the Roman Empire in the 3rd to 5th centuries

Goth was thought to be first used to describe bands around 1979, with Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees

There are sub cultures within the sub culture, such as cyber goths

Goth band Bauhaus graced the cover of Smash Hits in 1982

“They won’t like me saying it, but their lifestyle, unlike the punk scene, is a middle-class sub culture,'’ says Dunja Brill, who carried out the study.

“They are usually intelligent youngsters who have rejected the idea that teenagers must fulfil certain criteria.'’

But is that right? Will the pale faced, sullen-looking teenage goth next door end up being your bank manager in 10 years’ time? The Magazine headed to the gothic Mecca that is Camden Market to find out.

“Where I live it’s usually the chavs who start all the trouble not the goths, so I think we are quite a peaceful lot,” says Antoinette Drakes, 16.

“We just mind our own business and get on with what we like to do. But goths are like any other group, a lot depends on the individual.

“On the whole we are quite sensitive but you get some who aren’t, who are just posers and are just on the pull. Some will end up being doctors and some will end up being unemployed. Goths are a mix of personalities, just like everyone else.”

‘Chavs cause trouble’

But Keeley Dale, 18, says the study is just putting another label on goths.

“It’s always about labels in today’s society and that exactly why I dress the way I do, I don’t want to fit into other people’s stereotypes,” she says.

“So I’m not only a goth now, I’m also aspiring middle class. What is that anyway? I don’t want to be a doctor and read the Daily Telegraph, I want to be a writer and read whatever takes my fancy.

“There are some things that I do recognise in this research, goths can be sensitive and aren’t usually violent, but at the end of the day I think such things depend on the person, not the way they choose to dress.”

Mia Joseph, 40, has been a goth since her early teens and says it is a way of life for her now. She runs a market stall specialising in gothic wear, leather and PVC.

Threatening

“It’s not about fitting in to a particular subculture, this is just my life. I’m beyond thinking of myself as a goth, I’m just me.

“There are characteristics in the study that I think are true, goths do tend to be peaceful and sensitive, interested in literature and it is a way of life for many that continues long into adulthood. Why that is middle class I don’t know.

“I think people are a lot more accepting of us now. Years ago people found my piercing and tattoos threatening, now they are part of everyday life. A lot of people have their nose pierced or a tattoo.

Essential footwear for a goth

“I have grannies who come up to me and say they wish they’d been able to dress the way I do when they were younger.”

But there is one trait that seems to cross all teenage sub cultures, whatever they wear, whatever music they listen to and whatever a study says - and that is sex.

“Of course I want to fall in love, but I’m fully prepared to try out quite a few ladies to find the right one,” says Dan Taylor, 18.

“I’m still a hormonally-charged teenager after all, as well as a goth.”

Keeley shouldn’t worry about Goth’s reading the Daily Telegraph. Goth’s tend to have socialist political views. Furthermore from 10 years of being a Goth I’d say they are more class less than middle class, that’s sort of the appeal of the scene.
Vicky, London

I tend to agree with this column, Most of “us” have jobs and we mostly work in high tech where its not what you look like, but can you do the job! Yeah the older ones look at the newbies with pride because they tend turn out ok.
Bill, San Jose Ca. USA

I’ve been a goth for well over ten years now, it’s a big part of my identity. I’m currently a phD student researching Chemistry, and although it may suprise some people, I’m not even the only goth in my lab. It’s good to see that someone is attempting to shake off the bad image we goths sometimes get.
Ross Forgan, Edinburgh

Back in 80-84 my mates and I loved the banshees and the cure, they would do the eyeliner and the black lippy while I was happy to listen to the music.
None of them are doctors or lawyers or fulfilling artistic ambition of any kind.neither are they still cutting around in pvc trousers or slashed t shirts…they have grown up…they have kids of their own and no doubt will fret just like our folks over their sons and daughters going out dressed ‘like that!’ the only sustainable element of the goth era was the music…it was brilliant then and brilliant now! Robert Smith for Prime Minister!
mic docherty, Cairo Egypt

I am a 40-something Goth (and have been since my late teens), so is my teenager daughter and my 20-something partner. I would say its definitely a way of life for a me but although I am educated to degree level, I wouldn’t say I have particularly middle-class values. I foresee being a ‘Goth’ until the day I die as it is a part of who I am rather than just a fashion trend or a phase I am going through.
Vicky, Leicester

being a goth myself i agree that goths are more likely to be intelligent and artistic. i come from a working class background, so don’t agree that it’s a middle-class thing. but it’s certainly fun to be in the company of like-minded people
eamonn, brighton

Please don’t lump Siouxsie and the Banshees in with the terrible ‘Goth’ movement. The Banshees may have prostate impotence started the movement but they couldn’t control it. Thats why its so bad!
Goth is pure pantomime- silly clothes, silly music by fools for fools. Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, Fields of the Nephilim- all vile. The Banshees were musical innovators- its a shame Goth didn’t take more notice to them…
Simon Jones, London

This is news? Goths have always started off as the kids who were bullied at school for being intelligent or geeky, so of course they’ll end up in the more prestigious jobs. It’s the “normal” blokes wearing white shirts and drinking Stella that cause the trouble in town centres at night. This is obvious to anyone who’s actually met a goth and who doesn’t just rely on tabloid stereotypes.
Alice, Brighton

I get accused of being a goth because of the black hair, piercings, evil demeanor etc. But i’m not a real goth (or is that the test?)- i work for the National Trust and do loads of activism with Greenpeace and other groups in my spare time. I wish other “goths” would be less mopey and apathetic and down on the world and take action to change it instead of just superficial aesthetic rebellion!
Felicity, London

It makes perfect sense that authorities and people generally frown on Goths. Goths quite simply have learned to think for themselves and express their own views. Something not generally approved by the state

Paolo
Paolo, St Albans

I certainly would prefer a child of mine to be a goth than some tracksuited-baseball-cap-wearing gobby hoody. I know which one would concern me more! I would certainly hold out more hope of a goth actually knuckling down and getting on in life.
Mary, London

Yet more alternative natural viagra and buy get online prescription viagra patronising. Attitude and lifestyle maketh not the goth - it’s a club and music scene and nothing more. Those who choose to take the fashion onto the streets are very welcome to - I myself show a tad of it at times - but it’s becoming very tiresome to see every dysfunction female male sexual treatment, shelley-reading intellectual labeled as such. The BBC misses the point once again
Tom, Reading, UK

During the late ’80s and early ’90s I got in to being a goth. The music, the scene and above all the people were brilliant, absolute diamonds. Although we’ve all grown up and drifted apart there are few days when I don’t think back to those heady days when we were head to toe in black. Goths shouldn’t be afraid of labels and certainly shouldn’t be afraid to shatter the paradigms. As to the middle class bit, now I’m a Chartered Marketer… Guilty as charged I guess.
Scott, Tamworth (previously Swindon)

Given her rejection of the concept surely Keeley shouldn’t label the middle classes as ‘doctors who read the Daily Telegraph’?
Laura, Lincoln

Why do people need to follow like sheep and label their taste. I have always had my own personal and very individual style, considered in my teens to my 30’s,as gothy, weird, striking, unusual etc. Some elements of which are very much still here(I am now 50)but more in tune with my changing shape and years!!I never wanted to look like anyone else or follow anyone else, and if someone thought my image was bad or a problem, it was actually their problem, I know who I am.
A GP has designed a way to help patients understand why they are taking particular medications.

Dr Nigel Masters, from Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire, adds phrases such as “to lower cholesterol” to prescriptions.

He said it helps patients, particularly those on a number of drugs, understand why they should keep taking them.

Developing Patient Sildenafil citrate soft tab said the idea would help people be more involved in looking after their health.

The idea has been nominated for this year&39;if I can&39;”

“Patients were taking these medications on trust, and compliance can be an issue.

“But people need to know why they are taking something.”

Dr Masters began by putting new erectile dysfunction medication on repeat prescriptions for the elderly.

He then added soft viagra to prescriptions for people with diabetes and asthma, before deciding to expand the idea to all those who needed repeat prescriptions.

Health checks

Dr Masters has compiled a list of almost 600 drugs and reasons for taking them.

For example, a prescription for the drug amlodipine carries the label “to lower blood pressure”. Diclofenac gel can be given “for arthritis pain”.

Where conditions may be more sensitive, the wording is less direct.

The cancer drug tamoxifen carries the explanation “to prevent recurrence of disease” while sildenafil, better known as Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate), is labelled “to prevent ED” - erectile dysfunction.

Prescriptions also carry health check reminders. So a prescription for the contraceptive pill will say “check blood pressure yearly”, reminding the doctor, patient and pharmacist of the need for regular tests.

Dr Masters said patient confidentiality was an issue.

He said patients could choose not to have the explanations on their prescriptions.

But he added: “Very few have done so. And this idea has been well received by staff here and at the pharmacy.”

Dr Masters, whose five-doctor practice has 5,800 patients, said: “Virtually every repeat prescription in the practice now has this labelling.”

He said that for the scheme to be more widely used, the system needed to be computerised so more practices could make use of it.

“It needs to be an automated and standardised system.”

His idea has already won an enterprise award voted for by GPs.

Dr David Wrigley, a GP from Lancashire and deputy chairman of the Developing Patient Partnerships, said: “This simple approach offers patients the opportunity to be more involved with their health and to take more control over managing their medicines as well as improving safety.

“There may issues around confidentiality but the control this gives to people could far outweigh these concerns.”

(AP) An AIDS erectile dysfunction drugs sued Pfizer Inc. on Monday over ads the group says encourage use of Viagra as a party drug. The nonprofit group said such recreational use furthers the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, calls Pfizer’s ads for the impotence drug false and misleading. The suit echoes soft viagra made in an ad campaign announced by the group last month.

The nonprofit group alleges the marketing of Viagra has fostered an increase in the spread of STDs. Studies have found the drug is used illegally in conjunction with crystal methamphetamine to form a party drug “cocktail.”

While crystal meth can heighten sexual desire, it also can impair the ability to have an erection, said Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “In order to satisfy that heightened desire, you have to take Viagra,” Weinstein told reporters.

Pfizer denied it promotes the recreational use of its blockbuster drug. In 2005, Pfizer had $860 million in U.S. Viagra sales, according to IMS Health Inc.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks to halt the New York company from running ads like those that have promoted the drug’s use on New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday, said Tom Myers, the AIDS group’s legal counsel. The ads, which included taglines like “Be this Sunday’s MVP” encourage recreational use, the group alleges.

The suit also seeks to force Pfizer to undertake a public information campaign on the dangers of misusing and abusing the prescription drug. Furthermore, it seeks an unspecified amount to cover an increase in treatment costs borne by the nonprofit group, which runs free treatment clinics.

Pfizer said it and a company foundation already support AIDS prevention efforts, including a three-year, $6 million project undertaken in 2003 in nine southern states.

The advertisements in question featured phentermine post soft viagra xanax men than did earlier Viagra ads that used retired Sen. Bob Dole, then in his 70s, as a pitchman. Myers said the newer ads imply the drug is meant to enhance the sexual experience and not to treat a medical condition.

A Pfizer official warned against confusing age with the degree of impotence.

“The age of the personality that’s always seen in promotional materials doesn’t necessarily depict severity,” said Dr. Ivan Levinson, senior medical director for Pfizer Urology and Sexual Health.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation also wants the Food and Drug Administration to step up its oversight of Viagra ads.

An FDA spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a message left seeking comment.

In 2004, the FDA warned Pfizer that some television ads for Viagra made it clear the drug was for sex, but failed to note it was to treat impotence. The ads also failed to provide information on its major side effects, according to the letter.

Filing of the suit came as Pfizer announced it would cut 10,000 jobs in seeking to trim its annual costs by $2 billion.
