Sport - SRU call for Scots legend Brown
Former Scotland captain Peter Brown is one of three new non-executive directors named by the embattled Scottish Rugby Union.
Brown and businessmen Allan Munro and Tom Inglis replace three directors who resigned as part of an internal row.
SRU president Gordon Dixon said: “We have been most fortunate.
“These three men not only possess significant business expertise but have also a great deal of relevant rugby experience and knowledge.”
Brown, who played for West of Scotland and Gala, captained Scotland in 10 of 27 caps won between 1964 and 1973, including a famous victory over England at Twickenham in 1971.
The 63-year-old was chairman of the Scottish Building Society from 1993-2003 and remains a non-executive director.
He is also a senior partner in Hogg Thorburn chartered accountants in Galashiels and a non-executive director with the FSA-approved Edinburgh Risk Management (General) Limited, insurance brokers.
Brown is an independent member of Scottish Rugby’s appeals panel and acts as a match and discipline commissioner for both the RBS Six Nations and the Heineken Cup.
Munro retired as managing director of Ivory & Sime in 1999 and for the following three years was chairman of US-owned marketing business DraftWorldwide (Edinburgh).
He was also on the board of Forth Investments plc, which owned Hibernian Football Club and led the defence against the takeover bid by Heart of Midlothian.
The 57-year-old has been executive chairman of Stewart’s-Melville FP rugby club since 2001 and is also chairman of Edinburgh Sports Club.
Inglis was chairman of the UK Ford Dealers Council and chairman and chief executive of Strathford Motor Group.
The 64-year-old was elected president of Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Football Club in 1996 and remains in office, helping the club progress from the bottom of the regional leagues to BT National League Division 3.
He was previously involved as player, committee man and president of Ayr RFC.
Previous non-executive directors Fraser Livingston, Andrew Flanagan and Eric Hagman resigned in protest after the departure of David Mackay as SRU chairman.
The SRU general committee had passed a motion of no confidence in Mackay, saying they disagreed with the direction he was taking Scottish rugby.
Its three new appointments are initially until the SRU’s annual meeting on Friday 24 June.
