“We will never surrender the colours of our flag to those on the dangerous fringe of British politics,” the party co-chairman told its annual conference.

Dr Fox said the Tories were “the party of all Britain and all Britons” and would end Labour’s “intruder state”.

Shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin meanwhile said he hopes to be able to cut “unfair” taxes.

‘Vague promises’

Outlining the party’s programme for what he said would be its last conference in opposition, Dr Fox said people were sick of Tony Blair and his “soundbite” politics.

“Britain is crying out for a new direction and this week will give it,” Dr Fox told delegates.

“People are fed up with talk. They want action. They don’t want vague promises. They want to know exactly what a Conservative government would do - and when.”

Dr Fox was seeking to rally representatives after a poor showing in the Hartlepool by-election - when they were beaten by the UK Independence Party - and in recent opinion polls.

The slogan for the week in Bournemouth is “Timetable for Action” - with the party saying it will lay out specific plans and specific timings for what they would do if elected.

Mr Letwin says the Tories will not make specific tax cut proposals until next year, when it had a clearer idea of the state of the country’s finances.

This was because all political parties had too often gone back on their word in the past, and the Conservatives wanted to restore trust in politicians, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Redundancy

Although he cannot yet make any specific promises on tax, Mr Letwin argues the public needs to be convinced the Tories could save money by cutting midland national life insurance company

A review of half of Whitehall departments had already produced 15bn in possible savings, he said.

Civil service recruitment would be frozen and sales of government assets used to pay redundancy costs without affecting frontline.

Mr Letwin pointed to “unfair” taxes such as a pensioner having to pay a third of her disposable income on council tax and a first time buyer paying 600 in stamp duty on a 60,000 house.

In his keynote speech in Bournemouth, Mr Letwin said: “Thinning down fat government is not merely an option but a moral necessity for the next Conservative government.

“It is the route to making Britain’s tax system simpler and fairer.”

Incapacity benefit has always been there for thousands of people unable to work for a long time.

But there are concerns that it’s being abused, and taking up hours of GP’s time in signing claimants off.

Today, the Department for Work and Pensions will expand on Mr Blair’s comments on Monday and the emphasis is expected to be on getting claimants back to work.

It was also committed to “stamping out” age discrimination and would outlaw it, he told a conference on ageing.

Mr Johnson told Age Concern’s Age Agenda in London the government was “seriously considering” introducing pensions based on residency rather than national insurance liberty national life insurance company

Mr Johnson’s speech comes after he last week unveiled plans to find a consensus on how to reform the country’s pension system.

Mr Johnson said his department had a long-term aspiration of moving towards an 80% employment rate.

This would involve an extra one million older people joining the work force, he said.

Mr Royle, 55, sued City when he received only a fraction of the pay-off he claimed he was due in May 2001.

However, Lord Justice Sedley, Lady Justice Smith and Lord Justice Gage, overturned the earlier court award.

Mr Royle, now Ipswich Town manager, was also ordered on Tuesday to pay City’s legal costs thought to be over 80,000.

Inevitable relegation

The club had urged the appeal judges to reflect the reality of the circumstances at the time of Mr Royle’s departure in May 2001 - City’s relegation from the Premier League as soon as the team’s last match was played.

Mr Royle was refused leave to appeal further to the House of Lords, although he can still petition the law lords for leave.

Mr Stephen claimed the only people who would suffer would be the century national insurance company

Employees at the state-owned company will walkout from 1200 GMT on 23 March after backing a strike by 155 votes to 81 after a ballot on Monday.

Mr Stephen said every effort was being made to avoid the tendering process.

The ballot was held after the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said it failed to get assurances about future jobs and conditions.

Mr Stephen told Holyrood’s local government and transport committee on Tuesday: “My priority is to protect the lifeline Clyde and Hebrides services and ensure they continue to serve those remote and island communities that depend so heavily on them.

“That is why I simply cannot understand strike action being taken in these circumstances as the only damage will be to the people and to the communities.”

The Scottish Parliament rejected plans for national insurance institute

Unions claim any savings it could bring would only be made at the expense of the terms and conditions of ferry workers.

The unions also claim that if a new operator decided to base itself offshore, there could be big losses to the Treasury in national insurance contributions and taxes.

However, Mr Stephen said the Scottish Executive was pressing hard to find any alternatives to tendering which would comply with EU rules.

He added: “We are continuing to explore every midwest national health insurance and no tendering will take place until we have concluded our discussions with the European State national insurance
and until I have reported back to parliament.”

Consultation exercise

Mr Nicol added that he expected discussions to take place in April.

He added that concerns about the extra costs involved in putting services out to competitive tender - claimed to be up to 30 million - were not likely to persuade the EC to ignore its competition rules and that objections had to be based on legal argument.

The government is in the process of a consultation on the whole tendering issue and is asking for security national insurance
and organisations with an interest to make their views known prior to the services being tendered, should it be required.

The consultation on the commercial tender process ends on Wednesday, when Mr Stephen will decide whether to offer the routes as a deal to the lowest bidder.

RMT members - who account for 400 of CalMac’s staff - will now hold a 12-hour strike on 23 March on services including the Clyde and Western Isles routes.

CalMac was said to be “extremely disappointed” with the outcome of the ballot and plans to hold talks with the union in an attempt to avert the industrial action and the widespread disruption it would cause.

The company is writing to the RMT’s General Secretary Bob Crow to invite him to a meeting with senior management.
