News - Restaurant worker ‘was not victimised’

A manager for a restaurant chain has denied he victimised a member of staff who raised concerns over other employees working illegally.

Joe Powell, branch manager at Cafe Pasta, which is owned by the national chain Pizza Express, told a tribunal that Ibrahim El-Hoshi was not forced out his job.

London, is suing Pizza Express for constructive dismissal.

He had earlier told the tribunal at Woburn Place, central London, that he had raised concerns over a chef at the High Holborn branch of Cafe Pasta who he suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

He said the chef was a Czech national who officially left the restaurant on 9 December, 2001, but returned to work two days later under a different name with different national everest national insurance company
and bank details.

He claimed he was put under so much pressure that he was “on the verge of a nervous national interstate insurance
” and he left his job in January 2002.

But Mr Powell denied the allegations.

He said he was “annoyed” because Mr El-Hoshi had not raised the concerns with him before going to the area manager.

“I did not raise my voice or get angry. I told him he should have spoken to me first”, he said.

He denies Mr El-Hoshi was deliberately given unreasonable shifts but was asked to help out in the kitchen because of staff shortages.

At an earlier hearing, the tribunal was told four people had been arrested national alliance insurance

But Mr Powell said two of those had failed to attend college in national union insurance
with the terms of their visas and others were later released.

He said the reason the Czech chef had returned to work under a different name was in relation to a benefit fiddle, not illegal immigration.

The chef was later dismissed.
